Camp Overflow is a recreational campground that I have been camping at since 2010. In the summers of 2017-2020, I worked there as a campground staff member, so I became close with the owners. They had often complained that their website looked outdated, and were looking to get it redone. The summer after I stopped working there, I offered to make a new website for them - both to modernize their presence on the internet and to challenge myself to try something new. I spent the rest of the summer learning design principles, how to develop a website using WordPress, and some basic HTML/CSS.
I first designed a new logo for the Camp Overflow brand using Adobe Illustrator. This logo was used in various places on the website, and it will eventually be put on merchandise such as hats, magnets, and shirts.
I then wireframed the website using Adobe XD - incorporating design principles such as color theory, hierarchies, and typography - so that I would have a visual guide when I began development.
Using WordPress, I developed the website so that it had all of the desired features. Since some of the components required custom HTML/CSS, I taught myself the basics of the language through online courses and applied what I learned to the website. Finally, I deployed the website to a hosting platform using cPanel so that it can be accessed on the internet.
Although the camping season has yet to begin with the new website, I received over 50 positive comments from current campers, including:
"Love the new website. The campground looks great!"
"Super nice, really shows well on my cell phone."
"It looks amazing! Great job!"
The owners are also very pleased with the outcome of the website, and we look forward to seeing the impact that it will make in the upcoming seasons.
